What would an Indigenous-led food hub look like?

Humanize Media is exploring alternative food systems in the UK and bringing back the learnings to Australia..

Grant Amount: $4000

Region: National

Delivered by: Humanize Media

Year funded: 2023

Project status: Complete

The Challenge

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were the first farmers on this land and have been living in reciprocity with Country for thousands of years. However, as a result of colonisation, First Nations communities have faced substantial systemic economic and social barriers to food sovereignty and security.

The Innovation

Humanize Media is an innovative 100% Aboriginal owned design and creative venture agency based in Brisbane. Humanize Media’s team of highly skilled innovators offer design services, visual storytelling, content creation, document design and publishing.

In September 2023, Gaala Watson, a Gungalu and Birri-Gubba woman, embarked on a journey to the UK to connect with multiple community-driven food hubs. Here she sought to forge vital relationships with key members of the UK alternative food systems sector.

Gaala's visit held a profound purpose - to meticulously examine how social food enterprises are addressing the needs of marginalised communities within the UK. She specifically engaged with and analysed the facilities and infrastructure that have been developed to tackle food system issues in the country. The ultimate goal of the project was to identify ideas and concepts that can be adapted and implemented in Australia and support the creation of an Indigenous-led food hub. This endeavour aligns specifically with Gaala's long-term work in developing Yuri Muntha Gamu - Indigenous Food Sovereignty and Food Justice.

The project's key objectives were:

  • Establish connections with the key members of the UK alternative food systems sector.
  • To analyse how these enterprises are working with marginalised communities in the UK.
  • To see the facilities and infrastructure that have been developed to address issues in the food system in the UK.
  • To determine what ideas and concepts are applicable and transferable in the quest of imagining and establishing an Indigenous led food hub in Australia - in line with the longer term work with Yuri Muntha Gamu.

Why did Sustainable Table fund this project?

We have a strong and trusted relationship with Gaala. This project is an important piece of work that will inform the design of an Indigenous-led food hub. Sustainable Table understands this hub is vital for enabling First Nations self-determination and food sovereignty.
