Empowering Sustainable Farmers in Tasmania

Grant Amount: $55,000

Region: Tasmania

Delivered by: Sprout Tasmania

Year funded: 2023

Project status: In progress

The Challenge

Small-scale regenerative farmers in Tasmania face significant challenges due to a lack of dedicated support, representation, and government recognition. Educational and training pathways for this style of farming are extremely limited, with most resources focused on conventional, large-scale agriculture. As a result, many farmers are left to figure things out on their own. Sprout Tasmania is currently the only organisation in the state representing the needs of small-scale, sustainable and regenerative producers, yet it receives no core government funding, unlike industry bodies for large-scale agriculture. In addition, Tasmania’s agricultural strategy is heavily export-focused, meaning resources are directed toward large operations, while local, regenerative producers are often overlooked or treated as boutique rather than recognised as essential to a resilient local food system.

The Innovation

Sprout Tasmania is addressing these systemic gaps by acting as a central support hub and collective voice for small-scale farmers. Through advocacy, mentoring, education, and collaboration, Sprout is helping to shift perceptions of what sustainable farming looks like and why it matters. Their work not only empowers individual farmers but also strengthens the broader food system by promoting environmental care, people care, and business viability. They are strategically positioned to influence policy, build partnerships, and develop long-term solutions that recognise and resource sustainable and regenerative farming as a vital part of Tasmania’s agricultural future.

With operational funding, Sprout can deepen its advocacy efforts, grow regional partnerships, and build the investment case needed to secure long-term government support for the sector.

Why did Sustainable Table fund this project?

Sprout Tasmania understands the small scale farmers in Tasmania; their needs, ideas and challenges. They are well-respected across industry and the sector as a whole.
