If you’re saving for a new home, juggling a mortgage, credit card debt and bills or simply want to do your bit for the planet, why not get creative this holiday season? In our third post for realestate.com.au, we share our top 10 tips for cutting down on overspending and over-packaging.

1. Get creative with your gift wrapping

Instead of spending your hard earned cash on new wrapping paper that will only fill the rubbish bin by the end of the day, get crafty with some alternative wrapping solutions.

  • Try Furoshiki (see video), the traditional Japanese art of wrapping gifts in cloth such as a vintage scarf or nice tea towel. You can find cheap bits of fabric or scarves from any good op-shop.

  • Use old maps, pages from an old magazine, newspaper, music sheets or a vintage tin or box.
  • Use natural jute twine and paper tape as opposed to disposable ribbon and sticky tape made of plastic.
  • Get the kids to paint some plain recycled brown paper.
